Applying icon change to shortcuts (Misc issues)

by luluru @, Sunday, March 31, 2013, 18:39 (4035 days ago)

When I attempt to apply an icon change to a desktop shortcut, I get the message: "Something is not allowing icomancer to write to target folder. You must either: 1) run as administrator, 2) Set the folder security setting to be writable by everyone, or 3) something about allowing the program as an exception to my security program."

I tried running the program as administrator and I checked the the folder security setting which is set to run by "system." I did nothing to my security system which is Microsoft Security Essentials.

Within my system, Windows 7, I can change the icon for a shortcut without any problems. Any suggestions for a work-around for this?

Let's try something:

One question: the shortcut is one of the Windows Start Menu?

Now... create any shortcut and put it in any folder other than the start menu and try to imbue an icon to it. If you can do it, then Windows is not allowing you to change icons to shortcuts on the start menu. And that may be either Security Essentials or UAC.

All of the shortcuts I was attempting to change were on the desktop and were shortcuts to data file folders.

Creating a shortcut to a data file folder, putting that shortcut into another folder, and then attempting to change the shortcut icon was not successful.

Ok, I'm checking...

I'm running several tests to discard issues related to Windows Updates, but it is taking longer than I thought. I'll get back at you tomorrow, k?

I've found the solution for this problem. I'm going to release a HotFix within the next minutes :)

OK, this works, but ONLY if I open and run the program as administrator. It still does not work if I right-click "imbue, etc" the shortcut from the context menu.

Also, if I run the program as administrator, I can now change folder icons (not shortcuts) without using the double-click, create new folder, F5, delete folder F5, etc. work-around.

That will for sure get fixed when icomancer gets signed. I'm going to purchase an Authenticode cert and recompile/rebuild packages no later than this weekend.

Mmmhhhh... about this: I've noticed this delay in refreshing the icons gets worse when you have a laptop and you put it to sleep or hibernate several times (as I do) during a week. Sometimes I have to restart it after some days days keeping it without full shutdowns. This on Win7. I'm not sure if MS made any improvements on directory readers in Win8 Explorer.
